March is coming to a close so it’s that time of the month for my monthly net worth update!
I want to explain why I do a monthly net worth update.
- Keep me accountable
- Track my journey
- Prove that anyone can become a millionaire
- Prove that FIRE works
March is my fourth month of full-time RV living! Wow, this month has been interesting, to say the least. The market has been up and down and there is that virus going around. We did some hiking to Eagle Rock! We ended up stocking up on some good books for free from the library. Besides that just hung out and taken things easy.
Income
This month I made $6,233. I sold some stuff and took a few items back. Plus it was dividend payout in my investment accounts.
Expenses
Expenses total right at $2,675. The graph below is wrong due to my Wife spent about $90 at Costco that is not tracked here. This is a high month due to the fact that we paid up to April 19th for our current spot. I also had some maintenance done on my XB.
Savings
This month I saved $5,310 which is right around a 57% savings rate. This is what I call winning!
- $2,310 ROTH TSP (401K)
- $3,000 Taxable Account
Net Worth: $169,121
This is where it gets a little sticky now. My net worth posted on Personal Capital in the sleek graph below is wrong. Still, have some of that crypto that would not link to Personal Capital.
That is a -$50,653 loss since last month’s net worth update for February was $219,774
Final Thoughts
Well, this month has been crazy as far as the market is dropping and well there is a global crisis at hand. We literally got kicked out of our RV park on less than a day’s notice here in San Diego. It sucks because that spot was the cheaper of the two we stay at and is half the cost. We are now staying full-time at Coronado Island for around $1,200 a month which includes electricity, water, WiFi and use of showers and bathrooms. Did someone say Free Toilet Paper! But we are hearing rumors that they might kick us out of this place in the next week after telling us we could stay here till June and we paid till April 19th. What is fucked up to me is these are military RV sites knowing full well there are active duty military members here and they don’t give a shit.
I’m currently still trying to simply buy as many investments as I can when the price is low. I decided to use $500 this weekend to gamble with a single stock company. I put in a limit order if the stock hits a certain price it will buy 125 shares which will equal $500. Part of me wanted to do this as an experiment in trying to time things. The other side of me did not want to do it because I know how much smoother and better odds I have by just keep buying index funds at a low cost. Ultimately what made me go through with it as I have always been ok with using around 5% or so on high-risk gambles. This is why I invested some into crypto a few years ago. This is still less than 1% of my wealth and even less than that once the market bounces back. I might even invest a little bit more in single stocks for fun to see if I can win the gamble.
I would never usually recommend this type of investing. But someone like me with an incredible foundation of wealth I will be ok.
This crisis has taught me how much I want to FIRE! I can’t wait till I can finally stop trading my time for money. It’s going to be amazing to have full control over my time with no concern about money at all. I truly believe these choices I am making over the next 9 months of this year will have huge effects on my future for years to come. Me investing as much as I am and as consistent at these low prices is going to accelerate my wealth building in a big way. At the peak, I was hitting a $239,000 net worth. But now that the stocks have lost so much value I’m buying a lot more for the same amount I am investing. So when this market bounces back it’s going to be crazy how much my wealth will go up.
