2020 Annual Spending Review Idea!
It’s now mid-February 2021 and I was browsing FaceBook and someone asked me how much I ended up spending in 2020. That question hit me like a brick. Why did I not do an annual spending review?
Why did I not do an annual spending review?
I honestly planned to do something at the end of 2020. But I never got around to it and to be honest it slipped my mind. I got really busy at the end of 2020 with other focuses and passion projects.
Well, now that I am refocused it’s better late than never.
2020 Annual Spending Review Break Down
Now I’m a big math nerd in my eyes as I love to look at the numbers, break them down, and just study math with FI, FIRE, Coast FI, and well you get it. Yet I know not everyone is keen on that. I think being transparent and showing people the math and numbers helps them.
I think being transparent and showing people the math and numbers helps them.
It shows them what could be possible and maybe even where they can improve on their journey. For this post, I will not be breaking the numbers down to the fine print.
My reason? Is I don’t budget like that these days. So I honestly don’t keep track of the line items like…
- Food
- Rent
- Clothes
- Toiletries
- Misc
To me, it does not matter what line items I spend on. What matters is how much I spend overall. That is the real simple math of FI/FIRE. I think people overcomplicate line items yet don’t pay attention to their total spending. I like to make my finances Simple, Fun, and Profitable.
Maybe you remember I made a post a while back on Living On Less Than $30,000 In San Diego. Or maybe you never read that post of mine. It has some really good content that is related to this post.
Unconventional Thinking
Thinking outside of the box gives you an edge over everyone else because you are simply a problem solver. You are looking for voids in this world, approaching things in innovative ways, and finding variables to it through your creativity. Thinking outside of the box starts with you and your creativity. By doing this we have reduced our living expenses in such a way we don’t sacrifice anything in life. Another unconventional wealth hack we use is CC Hacking, we get paid to use CC’s.
What The Hell Was Your Expenses?
Well, I did not hit my mark of spending $30,000 or less in San Diego. In my defense, we had a lot of big expenses in 2020 with doing solar on our RV, some big personal expenses, and well honestly it’s ok.
That’s right in total for two people we spent less than $32,000 living in HCOL San Diego! I know what most people are thinking or would say.
“We must be pinching pennies”, or “we must not have fun”. These are not even slightly true. What this tells me is people have self refection issues with their path, finances, and where they stand.
Shut Out The Noise
One of the biggest superpowers I have been slowly mastering is shutting out the noise around me. I don’t chase the hot investment. I don’t buy what is considered these days. Most importantly I don’t give a fuck what others think of me.
Most importantly I don’t give a fuck what others think of me.
By shutting out the noise it allows me to truly start to understand what I value as a person. This in turn allows me to figure out what brings me the most joy to spend my money on.
It just so happens once you do this and you find contentment in life, everything becomes pretty cheap. I value my freedom over most things. This makes me spend most of my money on investing. Slowly building a passive income stream that will allow me to never have to work for money again.
By the way, I love using M1 Finance for my investing!
I highly encourage you to shut out the noise and find out what you value as a person. It won’t be easy, it will be hard, others won’t get it, yet you are worth it!
Wealth Domination!
You know what I spent last year. Yet that is not the whole picture. I dominated the wealth game last year. Even in a crazy year, I stuck to my plan and it paid off.
Last year I added over $115,000 to my wealth stash!
I love using Personal Capital to track my wealth!
I don’t even make $100,000 a year at my job. I’m now seeing my wealth take off like our Great Dane Kodiak. No, he is fast as heck!
I’m not special by any means or stretch. I’m just a guy that has found what he values and learned the math behind investing and Financial Independence. I’m making 2021 another great year for wealth domination.
I’m making 2021 another great year for wealth domination.
Now What?
I’m sticking to my investment strategy of keeping it Simple, Fun, and Profitable. This simple strategy has worked well for me. In 2015 I had about $20,000 saved up. Today I sit at over $360,000 by using that simple strategy.
I’m aiming to hit over $400,000 this year. If the market crumbles I don’t care. Because I will be buying more shares at lower prices. This will accelerate my wealth even more once the market comes back up.
By doing this I can’t lose. I plan to keep on keeping on so to speak. I do have some pretty incredible goals for 2021. Check out that post here. Soon I will even hit the half a million mark in liquid assets. That day I think I will celebrate with some buffalo wings! Yeah I know I’m a simple guy. I find that to make my life very fulfilling.
Remember doing what everyone else does won’t get you different results. You have to think creatively in this life. Most people refuse to get creative. Instead, they are unfulfilled and spend money in hopes to fill this void.
It never works out and keeps them broke. Which keeps them having to work till they are very old. In turn, makes them blame others for their lack of financial stability in old age.
Be unique, find out who you are. Turn problems upside down and solve them. Do more stuff yourself. Find ways when others find barriers. Trust me it will change your life!

This is a really helpful post. I haven’t done a spending review before but I’m trying to be more mindful of my spending and this review is great food for thought. Thanks for sharing!

Interesting to see your numbers, thanks for sharing. Do you know how that $10,600 breaks down? As someone curious at the cost of RV life I would be nice to know what RV expenses are in there. Also, were you stationary the whole year? Do you ever pay for an RV spot with hookups or are you boondocking / getting it for free somehow?
